Blog – Why Synthetic Grass

Synthetic Grass in Florida | Is Synthetic Grass Environmentally Friendly?

Replacing real grass with synthetic grass in Florida is an appealing option for many reasons. It stays green all-year round, requires minimal maintenance, and saves you money. But did you know that synthetic grass is also environmentally friendly?! Keep reading to find out the 3 ways synthetic grass helps the environment!

3 Ways Synthetic Grass in Florida Helps the Environment

  1. Synthetic Grass Conserves Water

Unlike natural grass, you don’t need to water synthetic grass. It stays green and healthy on its own. As a result, just one artificial turf field can save an estimated 6.4 million gallons of water per year.

  1. Synthetic Grass Doesn’t Use Pesticides

Pesticides rid plants and grass of bugs and weeds, but they are also known to wreck havoc on the environment and your health. Pesticide use has been linked to cancers such as leukemia, brain tumors, and breast cancer. You can avoid these harmful pesticide chemicals with synthetic grass in Florida.

  1. Synthetic Grass Reduces Your Carbon Footprint

A simple way to reduce your carbon footprint is by installing artificial grass. Gas-powered gardening equipment, such as lawnmowers, cause five percent of the air pollution in the United States. Synthetic lawns require minimal upkeep and eliminates the need for any gas-powered gardening equipment.

The Pros and Cons of Artificial Turf

Thinking of artificial turf for your Florida home? Are you trying to figure out the pros and cons of artificial turf before you make the switch? Let Southwest Greens of Florida help you.

There are a few categories we must consider when weighing the pros and cons of artificial turf. To really understand what is going to benefit your needs, you must consider the categories such as aesthetics, costs, water usage, maintenance, durability, and environmental impact.

Pro: Get a green lawn year-round when you install artificial turf. Turf no longer looks like the fake green replica you may be used to seeing, but now comes in more natural color schemes intended to look exactly like natural grass. There are plenty of styles to choose from, each manufactured to fit the tastes you have for your home. You’ll never have brown spots or holes, and uneven growth will be a thing of the past.

Con: While methods have changed drastically since the early days of turf manufacturing, it still hasn’t been able to replicate the aesthetic feel, smell or dynamic interaction of a natural lawn.

Pro: Over time, the upkeep of synthetic turf is much less expensive saving you a significant amount of money over the years in maintenance costs such as fertilizing, aerating, mowing, watering, and seeding.

Con: The initial cost of installing artificial turf can be high, and will depend entirely on the size of the area being installed and the kind of turf that is being used. Other costs may include the need for repairs, refilling and, finally, disposal fees when the turf has reached its life expectancy (anywhere up to 25 years).

Water Usage

Pro: Synthetic lawns do not require irrigation for growth. In larger areas, drainage systems can be used to harvest water runoff to be collected for reuse, reducing the amount of water used.

Con: Some systems may be required for specific styles of turf for maintenance and cleaning, and for any cooling systems to work effectively. Unfortunately, turf does not filter water in the same was a natural lawn would.

Pro: Synthetic grass is promoted as require little maintenance to maintain a great looking lawn for its long life. No mowing or fertilizer is required.

Con: Even though it does not have the same requirements as a natural lawn, there may be an extensive maintenance protocol if the lawn is used regularly such as in a field where sports are played. Maintenance will be critical if the surface is to reach its maximum lifespan. Maintenance may include cleaning of debris or moss and algae, disinfection or stain removal, and, although not common, weed removal.

Pro: You can depend on your artificial lawn to be tough and withstand more wear and tear than a natural grass lawn would. You won’t have to experience bare, bladefree spots, and turf touts higher playability. Turf can be installed in places scarce with fields, and can be played on in any season. Turf will also drain faster, meaning play can happen sooner after rainfall. It may also be safer to play on turf since it’s unlikely to be torn up by rough play, turn into patches of slippery mud, or risk uneven playing surfaces where ankles can be twisted, meaning fewer injuries.

Con: When it comes to durability, there are hardly any cons when it comes to turf. Using synthetic grass will yield higher usage and lifespan than natural grass.

Environmental Impact Pro: Artificial turf requires little to no water, no mowing, no pesticides and uses recycled material.

Con: Some of the materials used and emissions released during manufacturing may have a higher carbonfootprint. There is no organic biodiversity linked with artificial turf, and breakdown of turf after it has been disposed of will affect its environmental impact.

Artificial turf can be installed in home putting greens, on rooftop gardens that cannot support the weight of traditional lawns, in areas that do not have the conditions to grow real grass, easily cleanable areas for small pets, and anywhere you may want to reduce your carbon footprint.

There are many pros and cons of artificial turf to consider when deciding to choose artificial turf or a natural lawn. Synthetic grass could be the right option for your home. The pros and cons of artificial turf should be thought through. If you need any help, Southwest Greens is always here to answer your questions.

Does Synthetic Turf Get Hot?

Does synthetic turf get hot? The answer is yes. Synthetic turf can get a lot hotter than natural grass. It contains no moisture, so this often means your artificial lawn absorbs heat and has no way of cooling down. Southwest Greens has created a way to cool your turf down with its innovative HydroChill technology.

HydroChill is designed to operate much like the human body when it sweats – it uses moisture to cool the entire turf system through evaporative cooling technology. HydroChill is a patented technology that has been developed through years of turf system research. Vetted with lab testing and reallife application, HydroChill utilizes moisture to provide a cooling effect. HydroChill naturally holds moisture using rainfall, dew, and irrigation to keep your lawn cool for days. It’s cost effective, and works with nature to give you a satisfactory feeling.

The system is a completely safe, antimicrobial, odorless substance that mixes easily into water and is sprayed and agitated into the infill, over the course of a few hours to a few days depending on the size of the lawn. During the curing process, be sure to take care when walking on your lawn – the surface will be slippery! Don’t worry, though – it won’t be slippery after three to six hours of curing, when future hydration takes place.

It almost works like magic: when hydrated HydroChill will hold moisture and slowly release causing an even cooled surface; the hotter it is, the colder it gets. It has created temperature differences as much as 55 degrees! This cost-effective, ecologically friendly, and long lasting product will perform effectively and won’t wash away like cork or husk.

While actual results will vary depending on specific site conditions and climatic factors, HydroChill will produce a cooling effect anywhere the sun is out as long as it is properly hydrated.

Each summer seems to be getting hotter, with 14 of the 15 hottest summers on record occurring since 2000. More than 80 million people experience 100 degree temperatures! Does synthetic turf get hot? Yes, but there’s no reason your artificial turf can’t give you the same, cool, natural experience your natural grass would. Synthetic lawns may get hot, but with HydroChill technology, your whole family (even your pets) can enjoy your new lawn in fantastic relaxation. Here are 3 tips on how to maintain synthetic lawns in West Palm Beach!

3 Maintenance Tips for Synthetic Lawns in West Palm Beach

1. Use the Right Tools

It’s essential to use the right tools when maintaining synthetic lawns. Some recommended tools include plastic rakes, leaf blowers, leaf catchers, and turf brushes. Never utilize anything with steel points or spikes. Steel can tear the lawn and cause irreversible damage.

One of the best ways to maintain your lawn is to wash it at least once a month. This removes pet deposits and dirt. Rinsing regularly is a simple way to keep your synthetic turf looking and smelling great.
